Benefits of Recreation

Recreation

At one time, recreation was viewed as something nice to do when we had the time. This perception has long changed as individuals and communities now realize the countless benefits of recreation and active living. Research continues to demonstrate the far-reaching benefits associated with recreation. The Benefits Catalogue, produced by the REThink Group for Health Canada, the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association and Parks and Recreation Ontario, identifies eight major benefits areas. These are:

  • recreation and active living are essential to personal health
  • recreation is a key to balanced human development
  • recreation and parks are essential to quality of life
  • recreation reduces self-destructive and anti-social behaviour
  • recreation and parks build strong families and healthy communities
  • recreation reduces health care, social service and police/justice costs
  • recreation and parks are significant economic generators
  • parks, open space and natural areas are essential to ecological survival

Children's Fitness Tax Credit

The Government of Canada allows you to claim eligible fees paid in the year up to a maximum of $500 per child (an additional amount of $500 is available if the child is eligible for the Disability Tax Credit and a minimum of $100 has been paid for eligible fees in the year). Eligible fees include an amount paid related to the cost of registration or membership for your spouse's or common-law partner's child in a prescribed program of physical activity.  The child must have been under 16 years of age (or under 18 years of age if eligible for the disability tax credit) at the beginning of the year in which an eligible fitness expense was paid.  For more details, see the Canada Revenue Agency website.
